Friday 18th January 2018

Wooo what a week!!!

The children have been learning about different perspectives and have written a letter from the wolf to Little Red Riding Hood.

If you check out SeeSaw yo can see your child's amazing brain creation. Ask them about the activity:
-Why did we make a brain?
- What do the different lobes (sections) of the brain do?
- How do we imagine?

Maths has been estimating and doubling which we will continue next week.
Try asking you child 'quick fire' doubling questions to speed up their recall, numbers from 0 - 50. Remind the to double the tens, double the units and add them together... 'practice makes perfect!'

I am very please that most children are scoring 10/10 on their spelling tests. They are more aware of their spellings and making a conscious effort to spell correctly during written tasks. From the work I have seen, it looks like the children are enjoying the new spelling homework activities!

I look forward to seeing you tomorrow, if you have made an appointment.

I hope you enjoy your weekend and the children have plenty of sleep after their intense week!

Wednesday 9th January 2019

Welcome back and Happy New Year!

I am delight to say the children in Grade 1 red have settled into Term 2 fantastically well. From the first lesson they have demonstrated their enthusiasm and commitment to learning, which has set the tone for a very promising term.

We have started our new inquiry 'How we express ourselves'.
Central idea: 'Imagination is a helpful tool in accessing the world and beyond'.

The children have been expressing an interest to learn how imagination is created, how it effects our dreams, how we can understand others points of view, how our imagination shows our personality, how to make imagination reality and how using our imagination can help us succeed in life.  All of the lines of inquiry the children have shared are going to make a fantastic second term for learning!

This week:
For Language Arts, the children have read the story 'Little Red Riding hood' and a version from the wolfs perspective, this is to incorporate our line of inquiry.

Maths has been focusing on learning to count in 2, 5 and 10s. We have been creating games and will be moving onto problem solving later in the week.

Important dates:
Public holiday 14th January
ASP starts 15th January
PTC: 19th January- please complete the form sent by the school office ASAP
28th January - 1st February - Literacy week: children can bring a book to school for the weeks activities, also there will be a competition to enter for families.... information will be given soon!
1st February Dress up as favorite book character- prizes for best dressed

Term 2 is an exciting term for academic, social and emotional progress for the students and we have an amazing term ahead, all of which leading up to the new campus move.

Exciting times for all the Horizon community.

I am looking forward to seeing you all soon!

December Japanese class JNL Newsletter

Dear Grade 1 Red Parents,

Today is the last day of the first term.
And it's already the end of this year.
I hope you will have a wonderful holiday and a happy new year!

*During the winter break, students have Japanese homework.
Please check it with your child.

Here is monthly Japanese class newsletter.
Please enjoy reading it.
                                                                                Ms. Hayashi

The Grade 1 students spoke about their precious things at the topic “Takaramono o oshieyou”. Each student presented that to everyone in the class; for example, the stuffed animal, the game, and the trophy which got  by swimming.
Next topic was “Sukina mono naani”. They wrote some sentences about their favorite thing on their note. They need to become used to the action of writing from now on.
The most remarkable topic in this month was “Ookina kabu (The Giant Turnip)”. This is a Russian folktale and very popular as you know. They enjoyed reading this story, especially they liked the repetition of a rhythmical shout “Untokosho, Dokkoisho 「うんとこしょ、どっこいしょ」”. Also we enjoyed dramatizing it. After reading it, we drew the picture of this story.
They keep practicing hiragana letters. They got good scores on the hiragana test! We will learn katakana and kanji next term!

Monday 3rd December 2018

Only 9 days of school remaining this term and we are extremely busy! Here is some information and gentle reminders to ensure a smooth end to the term.

Wednesday 5th December: Ice skating.
-Please sign your child up if you have not done so already.
-Please hand in the payment for entry via me.
-It has been discussed that the helmets for rent at the rink are a little large, we suggest that your child can bring in their bike helmet/ snow helmet (if they have either, NAMED), or to wear a beanie hat so if your child does rent a hat at the ink, it will fit better.
-If you would like your child to wear knee/ elbow pads/ protectors., please send them in with them as they are not provided at the rink (also NAMED)

Friday 7th December.  Winter Showcase Dress rehearsal.
We will be traveling, during school time, to Tsurumi for a dress rehearsal. The children are required to bring in one winter clothing item for the performance.

The winter show case is on Saturday, however, if your child is unable to attend, please email me so I know who to expect.
